GETTING THERE / DIRECTIONS

GETTING TO FRANCE FROM THE UK

BY PLANE

The nearest airport is Nice which is approximately 100 kms from St André. It is a major airport served my many airlines including British Airways and Easyjet.  http://www.nice.aeroport.fr

Marseille airport is slightly further away at approximately 170 kms from St André. Again this is a major airport served by many airlines including British Airways and Easyjet http://www.marseille.aeroport.fr

Nice airport is the best one to choose for the most flexible travel options up to St André

BY CAR

There a large number of ferry companies offering crossings http://www.directferries.co.uk/ but the cheapest we have found are http://www.speedferries.com/ that operate from Dover to Boulogne. Eurotunnel is the quickest way to make the crossing from Folkestone to Calais http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcp3main and give you more flexibility as there are many crossings throughout the day which can relieve stress if you miss your time slot.

The drive from the UK to St André takes around 12 hours from Calais or Boulogne if you take the motorways. The scenic route is slower but much prettier and can be done over a few days if time allows you to stop off at some of the towns en route. We have done the journey many times via the motorways and have found the quickest route to be:-

Calais – Reims – Troyes – Dijon – Lyon – Grenoble – Sisteron – Digne les Bains – St André

The other option is to take the French motorail which transports you and your car from Calais down to Nice and it is then an hour and a half drive from Nice to St André. http://www.raileurope.co.uk/frenchmotorail/

BY TRAIN

Eurostar would take you as far as Paris www.eurostar.com and then you could get a train from Paris to Nice http://www.beyond.fr/travel/railtgv.html

GETTING FROM NICE TO ST ANDRÉ

There are a number of options available depending on whether you want to have your own transport while you are here. There are lots of things to do without a car but, if you want to explore the region then a car is a necessity. The nearest hire car centre (if you don’t pick one up in Nice) is in Digne les Bains which is a 40 minute coach or train ride away from St André. We would be happy to help advise you on the best travel arrangements to fit in with your plans and travel times.

HELICOPTER

There are a number of helicopter companies who operate out of the Cote d’Azur. It is possible for them to land in the large paragliding/hangliding landing field in St Andre. Prices are available on request but are obviously less expensive when you travel in a group.

COACH

There is a coach that travels once a day to and from Nice airport to Gap stopping at St André en route. It costs around 12 euros for a single trip and takes around 2 hours and, if your flight times work with the coach times and you don’t need a car while you are in St André, then this is a great option. Don’t worry about your luggage either as it is a proper Mercedes coach with a luggage store underneath!

The coach departs Terminal 1 of Nice airport from bus stop number 4 at 14.40 arriving in St André town at 16.35. We would be happy to collect you from town and bring you up to the house as it is too far to walk with luggage. The return trip to Nice leaves St André at 10.45am and arrives at Nice airport (Terminal 1) at 12.30pm. (There is a regular free shuttle bus that runs between Terminals 1 and 2 in case your flight is not from Terminal 1). Please note that this service does not operate on a Sunday.

TRAIN

The Chemin de Fer (mountain railway) runs 4 times daily between Nice and Digne les Bains. It crosses five valleys en route affording breathtaking views of dramatic landscapes not seen from the road. The journey from Nice to St André takes around 2 ½ hours and the cost is approx 15 euros for a single trip. We would be happy to collect you from St André train station if you use this option.

The timetable from Nice to St André is found through this link http://www.trainprovence.com/provence.Asp?laliste=0;3751

and the timetable from St André to Nice is via this link http://www.trainprovence.com/provence.Asp?laliste=0;3753

NB: The Chemin de Fer train station is not the same location as the main SNCF train station in Nice – the easiest option is to get a taxi from the airport to the Nice Gare du Sud – around a 15 minute ride away.

Car Hire

All the major car hire companies operate out of Nice airport but it worth booking in advance through either Holiday Autos or Nova Car Hire who search all the suppliers to get you the cheapest deal http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/ http://www.novacarhire.com/

The drive from Nice to St André takes around an hour and a half along mountain roads and the scenery is breathtaking. Entrevaux is the half way mark and well worth a stop for a coffee or a snack. http://www.provenceweb.fr/e/alaupro/entrevau/entrevau.htm

bullet Just after the Hotel Lac et Foret on your left you will see a Spar supermarket on your right
bullet Turn right just before the Spar and follow the road past the big landing field on your right and Aerogliss flying school on your left
bullet Road bears round to left and you will pass through a small wooded area then reach a fork in the road
bullet The main road forks off to the left but on your right will be a large gravel car park and you need to follow a small road that heads up towards the river and then bears left up and over an old iron bridge.
bullet Cross over the bridge (be warned – the wooden planks will rattle but it is perfectly safe!) drive up the hill for about 500m and our house is the first property you come to on the right hand side
